McConnell flip-flops, says he now supports Merrick Garland after previously rejecting him

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has indicated that he is fully on board with Joe Biden's pick of Merrick Garland to head up the Department of Justice (DoJ), which is a sharp deviation from McConnell's position on Garland four years ago. When recently asked by Politico whether he supports Garland for attorney general, McConnell responded with a simple, "I do." Back in 2016 when Barack Hussein Obama was in the White House, however, McConnell opposed Garland when he was presented as an option for the United States Supreme Court following the sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia. McConnell said back in 2016 that blocking Garland was the "most consequential thing I've ever done." At the time, he insisted that the future of the high court seat was for the American people to decide since it was a presidential election year and the White House was controlled by a different party than the Senate. "President Obama and his allies may now try to pretend this disagreement is about a person," McConnell is quoted as having said. "The decision the Senate announced weeks ago remains about a principle, not a person." Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) likewise now support Garland after previously working overtime to block his path to the Supreme Court under Obama. Just like McConnell, these two establishment stooges apparently have no issue advancing the Biden agenda. After winning back the White House in 2016, these same establishment Republicans switched their tune and immediately moved to fill Scalia's vacant seat with Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2017.

Politics is nothing but a game

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a two-day confirmation hearing for Garland during which he failed to answer enough questions, some Senate Republicans complained. Many of the big-name Republicans, including the aforementioned, were more than satisfied with Garland's performance. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), a McConnell confidant, was pleased, as was Chuck Grassley (R-Ia.). As some readers will recall, McConnell earlier recommended Garland for the position of FBI head during the Trump administration. His newfound endorsement of Garland for attorney general gave the green light to other establishment Republicans to also support him. Garland's nomination vote is scheduled to take place on March 1 in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Should this go smoothly, which appears likely, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durban is hoping for a final confirmation within the following week. Garland currently sits as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, where he also served as a chief judge. He previously worked at the U.S. Justice Department, where he played a key role in overseeing the criminal investigation into the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings. To help gain support, Garland spoke profusely during the confirmation hearing about his law enforcement background. Garland is endorsed by various law enforcement groups including the Fraternal Order of Police, which endorsed Donald Trump for president both in 2016 and 2020. "When Garland was asked if he thought people entering our country illegally were breaking the law, Garland said he, " ... hadn't thought about it,'" wrote one Breitbart News commenter. "This one answer should disqualify him as Attorney General." Another responding to him noted that McConnell is "a part of the deep state apparatus," which fully explains why he now endorses Garland after previously opposing him. "Anybody who survives more than one term becomes part of the SWAMP," wrote another, "and then the quest for perpetual reelection continues until they finally pull a Ted Kennedy or a Robert C. Byrd or a John McCain or a John Lewis or an Elijah Cummings or a John Murtha, while still in office."
