Conspiracy theorists have had many hunches about Antarctica throughout the years. For example, the area gained the attention of many upon the discovery of the "bleeding waterfalls," which remains one of the strangest natural phenomena in Antarctica.
Others also talk about the mystery of an alleged "pyramid" that was discovered on the continent. But according to research,
the pyramid is actually a mountain.
Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica
The Ellsworth Mountains were discovered by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913. At the time, they referred to the mountain as "The Pyramid" to keep the true nature of the discovery a secret from others. They also continued to use that name on all geological surveys of the area.
But in the last hundred years, people have begun speculating about the true nature of the location, even though proof exists that the "pyramid" is a mountain because it can be seen poking out of the ice. (Related:
Volcanoes beneath ice in Antarctica could erupt and leave the planet “uninhabitable,” warn researchers.)
Now, a second interesting geographical feature has been discovered and people are once again excited about the "pyramid" in Antarctica. The location is found at the coordinates 79°58’39.25?S 81°57’32.21?W, which is a much-searched spot on Google Earth.
Dr. Mitch Darcy, a geologist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, explained that the pyramid-shaped structures can be found in the Ellsworth Mountains, which is a range more than 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) long.
Because the mountains are enormous, it’s not surprising that their rocky peaks crop out above the ice. The peaks are made of rock, and it's a coincidence that one particular peak has a pyramid-like shape.
"It's not a complicated shape, so it’s not a special coincidence either. By definition, it is a nunatak, which is simply a peak of rock sticking out above a glacier or an ice sheet. This one has the shape of a pyramid, but that doesn't make it a human construction," said Darcy.
This information confirms that the mysterious "pyramid" is a mountain poking out of the ice in Antarctica.
The history of Ellsworth Mountains
The Ellsworth Mountains were
discovered by Lincoln Ellsworth, an American, on November 23, 1935, during his flight across Antarctica. This flight was also the first to cross the continent.
Ellsworth flew from Dundee Island near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula to the Ross Ice Shelf, which was only several miles short of Admiral Byrd’s Little America base, where he ran out of fuel.
The first detailed work in the Ellsworth Mountains was conducted in the 1961-1962 austral summer by John Splettstoesser and three others working for the US Antarctic program. The team used motor toboggans to explore most of the Sentinel Range to the north, and part of the Heritage Range to the south.
Other speculations about Antarctica
Antarctica has been the subject of many speculations recently, especially after conspiracy theorist Eric Hecker described the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station by the South Pole as an "
air traffic control" hub for aliens.
Hecker said that in 2010, Raytheon Company, the U.S. aerospace and defense conglomerate, chose him to be a contractor at the research center operated by the
National Science Foundation (NSF).
Hecker claimed there was "much more to the station than first met the eye."
