Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who oversees the self-proclaimed "sanctuary city," has considered
sending illegal border crosses to suburbs in other counties.
The
Center Square reported that Johnson, a Democrat,
is working with officials from Cook County and others to coordinate a plan to bus migrants out of the Windy City. "We see some real support on the horizon," he said. We’ve had conversations with mayors across not just Cook County but the surrounding counties, and we have had tremendous feedback."
About 12,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago from the southern U.S. border in the past year, mainly due to busing efforts by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Despite this, Johnson said he is "looking forward in the days to come that these collaborative efforts that we have been organizing will begin to see some dynamic come to fruition."
Johnson earlier said the Windy City would remain open for those wanting to come, affirming its stance as a "sanctuary city." He remarked: "Here's what I am committed to doing: Honoring the law of being a sanctuary city, and building systems of care that provide a pathway with dignity for individuals who are seeking refuge here in the city of Chicago."
City and state taxpayers have earmarked $94 million for migrant housing as of writing. Illinois' budget has also allocated $550 million in taxpayer subsidies for the health care of migrants aged 65 and up. However, officials in the Windy City have come under fire for refusing to disclose a full accounting of more than $120 million previously allocated to illegals arriving in the city. (Related:

Johnson's plan would likely mimic what New York City (NYC) Mayor Eric Adams has done. Under the Democratic mayor's purview, thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens in the Big Apple have been bused to upstate New York – often without any coordination with local officials.
Johnson's predecessor begs Texas to STOP busing illegals
It is worth noting that in May, former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot
begged Texas to stop busing illegals as the city has no more resources to sustain them. Lightfoot later stepped down during the same month to make way for her successor Johnson, who was elected to replace her.
"We have not heard anything back. Frankly, I didn’t expect to hear anything back, but I felt like it was important to once again try to engage the governor, but also let him know what his policies and practices are doing in cities like Chicago," Lightfoot said.
"We are completely tapped out. We have no more space. No more resources. And frankly, we're already in a surge. We've been seeing … [more than] 200 people coming to Chicago every single day. We call them walk-ins because they're not coming on buses, but they are coming on planes from San Antonio. We're very concerned because they don't seem like they're getting screened at the border. We've seen people coming with serious medical issues."
"What’s getting lost in what the governor is doing is the fact that these are human beings. In any other emergency, you would be coordinating; you would be collaborating; you would be talking about specifically what the needs of the people are," the former Chicago mayor continued. "You don't solve that problem by simply sticking people on buses to a city that they didn't ask to, for an uncertain future, and now we are literally full."
Ultimately, the problem boils down to the Biden administration's refusal to take border security seriously. It appears that Abbott is the only official interested in securing the southern border, and his busing of illegals to sanctuary cities like Chicago only serves as a reminder of the repercussions of an open borders policy.
