HACKED: Donald Trump Jr. tweets his father is dead and that North Korea is about to get smoked
Donald Trump Jr.'s Twitter account became the target of a cyberattack on Wednesday morning, Sept. 20, resulting in a flurry of peculiar and bewildering posts. The sequence of
hacked tweets on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, included a range of alarming claims and offensive content.
The initial tweet in the series, apparently posted by the hacker, read: "I'm sad to announce, my father Donald Trump has passed away. I will be running for president in 2024." This false announcement quickly garnered attention.
As if to prove he’s still alive, the former president sent an unrelated message on Truth Social, X's rival, just over 20 minutes after the false announcement. Truth Social was founded by Trump after his Twitter account was suspended in 2021 due to the risk of incitement of violence. The account was reinstated last November. (Related:

Subsequent posts of the hacked account included:
- A warning about impending military action against North Korea: "North Korea is about to get smoked"
- A message targeting X CEO Elon Musk
- Offensive language, including a racial epithet and the phrase "F*** Joe Biden"
In one particularly bizarre tweet, the hacker alluded to "some interesting messages with Jeffrey Epstein," referencing the convicted sex offender who died in a Manhattan jail in 2019. This raised further concerns and questions regarding the breach.
Additionally, the hacker claimed, "My dad owns u Elon Musk bum," taking a swipe at the billionaire entrepreneur. Another tweet stated, "[W]hen I become president I am going to burn the SEC," referring to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Hacking incident raises questions about X's ability to safeguard user data
Despite the shocking and erroneous nature of these posts, they were deleted from Donald Trump Jr.'s account shortly before 9 a.m., indicating that control had been restored.
Eric Trump,
the former president's middle son, joined the discussion and joked in his own post to X: "I don’t want Donald J. Trump Jr. to get his account back – this is all interesting."
Trump Jr. has since posted on X, but did not mention anything about his account being compromised. He did "like" a tweet saying he had been hacked.
Andrew Surabian, a spokesperson for Trump Jr., confirmed in a tweet that the posts were not legitimate and that the account had been hacked.
This incident underscores the ongoing concerns about the
security of social media accounts, particularly those belonging to prominent political figures, as the 2024 election approaches. It also raises questions about the platform's ability to safeguard user data and address security vulnerabilities, given that X is still under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission.
The investigation was initiated following a whistleblower disclosure by former security chief Peiter "Mudge" Zatko, who alleged unaddressed security vulnerabilities on the platform.
The FTC investigation is related to allegations that Twitter deceptively used account security data for targeted advertising, affecting more than 140 million X users. The FTC is seeking testimony from Elon Musk, who has laid off the bulk of X's workforce since taking over the company.
