Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied claims by President Joe Biden that he plans to attack members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In a recent plea to Republicans to support additional military aid, Biden suggested that if Putin succeeded in Ukraine, he would continue by attacking a NATO nation. Putin countered by alleging that Biden is only fabricating scenarios in his head to secure approval for increased military aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian special military operation in the country. He added that Russia has no intention of confronting the NATO military alliance. Putin dismissed Biden's assertions as "complete nonsense" in an interview published by a state television station on Sunday, Dec. 17. He suggested that Biden is attempting to justify his own "mistaken policy" on Russia. According to Putin, Russia lacks any geopolitical, economic, political or military interest in fighting NATO countries. "It is complete nonsense – and I think President Biden understands that," Putin said. "Russia has no reason, no interest … to fight with NATO countries." Putin may put peace off the table until after the U.S. presidential election

A senior State Department official, speaking anonymously last month, suggested that Putin would not seek peace until the results of the upcoming American presidential election are known. The ongoing verbal exchange revolves around the United States' continued support for Ukraine and the perceived need for military aid to help Ukraine "win" the conflict with Russia. Thus far, this approach has led to significant inflation and an insurmountable national debt in the U.S. The situation may pave the way for a new economic system, suggesting increased control and enslavement. Putin suggested that Biden might be exaggerating fears to justify his "erroneous policy" in the region. U.S.-Russia relations have deteriorated significantly since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Over the 22-month conflict, the U.S. has provided Ukraine with $111 billion in weapons, equipment and aid, assisting in resisting Russia's advances and reclaiming some territory. Biden advocates for additional support to Ukraine, seeking approval from Congress for a $110 billion foreign aid package, with $61.4 billion of this going to Ukraine and the rest going to other U.S. allies including Israel. However, there is declining enthusiasm in Congress for prolonged involvement in the war. More and more Republican lawmakers are expressing their discontent with taxpayer dollars being diverted out of the country, with some of them blocking the aid package, insisting that the White House agree to certain concessions, including one proposal that would see spending on border security increase. On Dec. 12, Biden warned that the GOP's continued refusal to approve the package could be an early "Christmas gift" for Putin. Meanwhile, the Russian president continues dismissing the possibility of a direct conflict with NATO. He did, however, acknowledge increased tensions with Finland since the Nordic nation joined the military alliance. Finland, a NATO member since April, recently closed its entire eastern border with Russia, accusing Russia of orchestrating a migrant crisis. In response, Putin announced plans to establish a military zone in Russia's northwest. "They [the West] dragged Finland into NATO. Did we have any disputes with them? All disputes, including territorial ones in the mid-20th century, have long been solved," Putin stated. "Now there will be [problems] because we will create the Leningrad military district and concentrate a certain amount of military units there."
