COVID vaccine compensation claims totaling over $100M lodged against AstraZeneca

Big Pharma company AstraZeneca is now facing claims amounting to tens of millions of pounds from 35 victims of its Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine. Lawyers have issued the claims in the High Court over complications resulting from AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine. At least 40 more claims are expected to be lodged against the company. If AstraZeneca loses, the total compensation bill would amount to about 80 million pounds ($102 million). The government of the United Kingdom has underwritten any legal action brought against AstraZeneca as part of its deal in rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine program, which received regulatory approval by the end of December 2021. Manufacturers of the other coronavirus vaccines also received government indemnification. The victims and the families of those who were harmed by the vaccine have been offered a measly one-off payment under the U.K. government's Vaccine Damage Payment scheme. Under the British government’s scheme, only victims who suffered adverse reactions that resulted in death or a 60 percent disability are entitled to a tax-free one-off payment of 120,000 pounds ($152,500). However, lawyers argue that the sum is inadequate in many of the cases, especially those where victims have died or were forced to give up their lucrative careers. The scheme has paid out in about 150 cases, of which nearly all occurred after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine. Sir Jeremy Wright, former attorney general, said in cases where the U.K. government had already paid damages, causation had effectively been proven. Additionally, Wright is urging Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to intervene and settle the cases before they reach court. Wright also said the offered payment is "wholly inadequate," especially if the government wants the public to feel confident that "they will be looked after if in the tiny, tiny minority of cases where the vaccine has gone wrong." He warned that the public's confidence will be damaged if the U.K. government does not step in and settle these cases. Victims and their families leading the lawsuit

In November 2023, Jamie Scott sued AstraZeneca in the High Court in a test case after suffering a significant permanent brain injury. Scott's injury was due to a blood clot that formed after he was vaccinated in April 2021. Scott, who was a constituent of Wright, was unable to work because of his injury. His wife Kate was called by the hospital three times so she could say goodbye to her husband. The couple have two young children, with the youngest still a baby at the time. But Scott was a fighter and he survived the "catastrophic" bleed in his brain. However, he was no longer the same man after his injury. He used to be fit and healthy before he was vaccinated. But afterward, he could no longer follow complex conversations and lost his job. Even his eyesight was impaired. He lamented that he only got the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine because the government said it was the right thing to do and so he and his children could visit his elderly father amid the pandemic. Kerry Williams' husband Ben Hollobone died after he received the AstraZeneca vaccine. At first, his symptoms were similar to a bad cold, which left him cold and shivering. He then experienced symptoms like extreme headaches, a rash on his leg, and a limp. By March 2021, Williams was becoming increasingly worried. Hollobone, who worked as an engineer, was sweating and had severe stomach pain and looked extremely unwell. Eventually, Hollobone was taken to the hospital and wrongly diagnosed with appendicitis. Next, Hollobone was transferred to another local hospital for further treatment, which was complicated because he also had low platelets and was at risk of bleeding. Williams kissed him goodbye and said she would be following right behind him. But because of lockdown rules at the time, it was the last time she saw her husband. Hollobone died on March 17, 2021. One year after Hollobone died, the coroner concluded that his death "was caused by the vaccination." His death certificate listed blocked blood flow to his bowel, blood clot and vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis as the causes of death. Vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) is a health condition that causes blood clots and the vaccine has been linked to it. Reports suggest that one in five cases of patients who contracted VITT have died. Another new case against AstraZeneca has been lodged by the widower of Nicola Weideling, an employee of the University of Oxford, who died at the age of 45 in May 2021 after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine. A coroner has already ruled that the cause of death was VITT. Her husband Kurt has urged AstraZeneca to settle the claim. AstraZeneca is being sued under the Consumer Protection Act over claims that the vaccine was not as safe as recipients were led to believe. There is no doubt that there are others who feel sick after immunization or have had diagnoses of illnesses but have not realized that they were feeling sick because of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
